With Heart

Political views are private matters in my world. Oh, I have my opinions and will express them, but I try, particularly professionally, to keep my views to myself. It’s been difficult to maintain that stance over the course of the last year, and during the last few weeks, but I continue to make the effort.

But, regardless of political viewpoint or affiliation, it seems to me that what is most important in any kind of leadership is leading with heart. In a business, in an organization, in a country, where it must start is with care for those whose lives are impacted by your decisions. Even in a company that makes widgets, there are people who make those widgets and people who use them. The world of AI is definitely real and the impact is, still, on human beings.

When actions are only about power and position, about ego and control, the human element is not just lost, it is violated. We are a nation of human beings. We are a world of human beings. Each of us has history and connection to others. Each of us has something to contribute. No, not everyone is perfect or good or kind. But seeing the lives of individuals as pieces on a chess board, that are controlled only by a thirst for domination, is not just terrifying, it is fundamentally wrong.

Leadership feels to me like a sacred trust. There are lives and families that depend on your actions. When you cast your stone into the water, the ripples travel far beyond your sight, far beyond your control. May we all bring compassion to our lives, our choices and our roles and, in that way, continue to fill our full hearts.
